Downed Horse Dies At New Holland!

March 13, 2000

Remember what Dr. Temple Grandin, Department of Animal Sciences,
Colorado State University in a report commisioned by USDA/ APHIS stated in her report regarding New Holland and published in The Horse in their December issue;
According to Dr. Temple Grandin,

" The New Holland sale will not accept horses that are severely lame or in very poor condition. "

and

The New Holland sale has banned horses with severe welfare problems from their sale."

Note this horse's left hind leg.

The bandage extends from his stifle area to his coronet band. He is tied in the trailer.

There is blood dripping through the floorboards, and onto the ground in several locations.

If this horse is not disabled, then just what IS a disabled horse?

If this horse does not have a severe welfare problem, then just what IS a severe welfare problem?

Does he have to die in the sales ring to qualify as having a severe welfare problem?

Does he qualify as being in very poor condition?

horse
According to the New Holland Police Department, the horse died overnight.

Just how much more severe or poor can he get???

What will it take for the New Holland Police Department to bring charges,

the New Holland vet to consider a horse debilitated, diseased, or lame?

Must the horses die in the ring?

Must the horses have only 3 legs attached to their bodies?

Oh, we forgot, these horses are

STILL BREATHING,

so that means we can still kick 'em, drag 'em, beat 'em and drug 'em to get them on the slaughter trucks.

As long as they arrive alive at the slaughterhouse they can be dragged off the truck with chains, have a cattle prod inserted into their rectum to make them stand so they can be hit in the head with a 4 inch bolt & be hoisted by a hind leg to have their throats slit.

PA Anti Cruelty Law

Title 18 Section 5511(d) Selling or using disabled horse.--A person commits a summary offense if he offers for sale or sells any horse, which by reason of debility, disease or lameness, or for other cause, could not be worked or used without violating the laws against cruelty to animals, or leads, rides, drives or transports any such horse for any purpose, except that of conveying the horse to the nearest available appropriate facility for its humane keeping or destruction or for medical or surgical treatment.

The Story & The Unanswered Questions

Blood is observed in several locations on the ground outside a horse trailer in the parking lot at a horse auction in New Holland, PA.

Blood is dripping from the floorboards of the trailer.

This is not normal. Professional horse transport companies can attest to this.

Witnesses observe an obviously injured horse standing inside a trailer.

Later, witnesses observe the same injured horse down inside the same trailer.

A known killer buyer is observed coming out to the trailer, after the sale has ended. The horse is then led out of the trailer into the auction barn.

The New Holland Police Department, NHPD,open an investigation into this alleged act of cruelty to animals. Reportedly, the horse came from OH to PA and was injured during the trip.

  • Where was this horse injured?
  • Who bandaged the leg?
  • Where?
  • When the driver arrived at the auction, did he seek vet care for this horse?
  • Who?
  • What was done, & at what time?
  • Why did the driver go to an auction in New Holland, and not New Bolton Center?

On Rte 23 coming into New Holland from either direction, are 2 vet clinics.

Did the driver stop at either of these clinics?

You mean, between OH & PA, there was not a VET to be found?

So you took the horse to an auction??

An auction, that in the horse industry is known as a "meat sale".

Did this horse have a Coggins Test & Health Certificate?

Did the NHPD inspect this paperwork?

As the story goes, the known "killer buyer" was going to take this "horse home & fix him up"

Odd, that is what another "killer buyer" said about this downed horse.

Just where IS that health paperwork??

Reportedly the "killer buyer" would leave the horse at the auction overnight, and return the next day to pick him up.

 Hello!

This NJ "killer buyer" is going to come back to PA for ONE horse?

When, on his way to TX?

Just how much is he paying for diesel fuel???

Or gas?

Not under $1.50 a gallon.

No way a tractor trailer, or a dually pickup truck pulling a horse trailer is getting more than 10 miles to the gallon.

Again, is the paperwork going to match on this horse?

Would the bill of lading state that the horse is going to a location that could be considered the,

"nearest appropriate facility for medical or surgical treatment or destruction"?

Bel-Tex, a horse slaughterhouse, in Ft Worth, TX is over 1500 miles away.

New Bolton Center, a vet hospital, is less than an hour.

Valley Protein, a rendering company, is less than an hour away.

TX and NJ do not qualify as,

"the nearest appropriate facility for its humane keeping or destruction or for medical or surgical treatment."

Reportedly, according to the the vet who works at the auction in New Holland , the horse did not have a broken leg, and could be transported. The horse had a few cuts.

The horse is reported to have died during the night, probably from internal injuries.

WHOA!

The horse died?

From what, a few cuts?

Internal injuries?

The vet said this horse is fit to travel, & then he dies??

How could this horse even make it to NJ & be "fixed up" if he is so severely injured that he dies?

"Killer buyers" may be a lot of things, but a poor judge of a horse's condition is not one of them.

A "killer buyer" or a "dealer" is not going to expend the money on a horse that is so far gone that he dies overnight,  "to fix him up".

UNLESS,

the horse is valuable enough to justify the expenditure of time & MONEY.

And, if the horse is that VALUABLE,

the horse would have gone to New Bolton Center,
not an auction in New Holland.

  • Did the NHPD see the carcass?
  • Did the NHPD see the renderers records?
  • By law, the renderer has to maintain such records.
  • Internal injuries?
  • When the vet "examined" this horse, did he take a temperature?
  • Respiration?
  • Heart Rate?
  • Capillary refill time?
  • Check gum color?
  • Look in his eyes?
  • UNBANDAGE the leg?
  • X-ray the leg?
  • Listen for gut sounds?

Just what DID this vet examine on this horse ??

When a horse has been injured in a trailer accident, or has been observed down in a trailer with blood leaking through the floorboards it would seem normal procedure to evaluate the horse's vital signs. If this horse had internal injuries so severe as to cause his death within hours, it would seem that the vital signs would indicate there is a problem.

SO WHERE WAS THE NECESSARY VET CARE?

DID THIS HORSE REALLY DIE??

Next time YOUR vet comes out to evaluate YOUR horse, take note of the procedure.

This is common sense. Vets follow this procedure when examining dogs, cats, horses, etc. Medical doctors do the same. They check
VITAL STATISTICS.

They UNBANDAGE an injury to EXAMINE the injury.

Horses do not become this severely injured, with internal injuries that would later cause death, without causing movement of the trailer that a driver can detect.

Why would the owner, or person who has duty of care, show the horse to a killer buyer, & not a vet?

The explanations provided to the NHPD do not add up.

Has the NHPD followed up & checked paperwork?

The known "killer buyer" has had previous run ins with the law.Was the "deal" to give the horse to the "killer buyer" made before or after the horse got on the trailer in OH?

Or
AFTER
the horse became injured "on the trailer"?

UPDATES

The EPN is receiving reports from citizens who have spoken with the NHPD, and the vet.

According to citizens who have spoken to the NHPD;

the NHPD stated that the vet had seen the horse on Monday, he had a few cuts, his leg was not broken, and he could be transported.

No vets would respond.

According to citizens who have spoken to the vet,

He never saw the horse on Monday.

So who is telling the truth?

  • Who told the NHPD that the vet had seen the horse?
  • The vet?
  • The auction?
  • The owner of the horse?
  • Who?
  • So, does this mean that the NHPD did not inform the owner or the person(s) who had duty of care, that by LAW, they HAD to provide NECESSARY VET CARE?
  • The horse supposedly died from his injuries. Well, obviously he was in need of vet care.
  • Then, why was/is nobody being cited for denying this horse necessary vet care?
  • No vets would respond??
  • Why didn't the NHPD take custody of the horse and have the horse transported to New Bolton Center?
  • The NHPD has been in operation how long in the town of New Holland, & they do not know who to call to transport a disabled horse to a vet hospital less than an hour away??

Transporting this horse from Ohio to PA to a horse auction and offering it for sale was in clear violation of the PA Cruelty Law. An auction sells horses, it does not provide medical or surgical treatment, it is not a facility for a horse's humane keeping, nor does it destroy horses.

And how in the world could this auction be considered the,"nearest available appropriate facility" ???

An auction SELLS horses.

Look up the word "auction" in the dictionary.

Reportedly this horse was injured on the trip from OH to PA.

Then WHY did the owners take the horse to an auction, instead of a vet hospital???

New Bolton Center is not that far from New Holland

The owner went inside and brought a known killer buyer out to the trailer, NOT A VET.

What true horsemen would condone the transportation of this horse from Ohio to PA to be sold for meat, and then transported to a holdover farm in New Jersey, before finally making the final trip to Texas in an overcrowded cattle truck with no food, no water, no rest, and not enough ventilation??

This whole process could last a week or more...

All this pain and suffering so some owner and a a few so called horse dealers could squeeze the last few dollars out of him...

They Are Still Alive...

All and any perceived threats to members of the EPN for exposing this criminal activity have been reported to the appropriate law enforcement agencies who are taking the necessary action against the perpetuators.
